SAMBA: SHAPE AND MATERIAL BRISK ARCHIVE


Samba (Shape And Material Brisk Archive) is a software program very useful for structural designer, particularly of steel structures. It is used to study and design new cross-sections quite freely, and to choose the cross-sections sizes which are the best for a given structural layout. It has more than 14,000 cross-sections ready to use.

Using SAMBA you can manage thousands cross-sections with a unique, powerful tool. SAMBA lets you choose the right cross-section for your steel structural elements among thousands other, thanks to its clever data filtering. SAMBA embeds buckling curves to AISC-ASD, and Eurocode 3, and so to choose the right cross-section size for a column, for instance, will be easy. SAMBA lets you study the best shape for new cross-sections optimizing the properties you are interested to. You can create sub-archives and merge more archives into one, you can import into SAMBA hundreds cross-sections at a time, reading a file in your preferred units of measurement.

Context sensitive help, hyper textual on line guide, makes SAMBA easy to use, while Print and Print-preview capabilities, and the command used to cut and paste images of your preferred cross-sections directly from within SAMBA to other applications via clipboard, make SAMBA a must-have tool for who designs steel structures. Besides the most common rolled and welded cross-sections, SAMBA lets you study the reunion of n arbitrary cross-sections, rotating and translating each cross-section until you get optimal design (composed cross-sections, built-up cross-sections, cold formed cross-sections, mixed materials cross-sections).

The choice of the cross-section is made thanks to several possible filters, including those based on design criteria. Once a simple structural layout has been chosen, design criteria are set, which the cross-section searched for must satisfy. It is then the program to search for the cross-sections that satisfy the chosen criteria (limitation of the flexural displacement, of the normal stress due to bending, flexural buckling check according to 3 standards, et cetera)
The User can browse, thanks to search-filters -including those based on design criteria-, the more than 14,000 cross-sections archive that is furnished with SAMBA. Besides, new cross-sections may be added of any possible kind. Among the cross-sections that may be added, besides rolled cross-sections and welded cross-sections, there are built up (composed) cross-sections user-defined, cold-formed cross-sections,  mixed material cross-sections and cross-sections defined as vector of polygons. The cross-sections may be added in an interactive way, or may be read from a file, in the units of mesurement preferred, even hundreds at a time. SAMBA is fully integrated with SARGON, as it is actually one of its components, and may also be used to widen the CSE cross-section archive (the same of SAMBA, more than 14,000 initial cross-sections).
The addition of all cross-sections is made upgrading in real time the section moduli and the second area moments, allowing a fast convergence to the desired values. The composed cross-sections, are got by translating and rotating the single composing cross-sections, until the desired final cross-section is got. While the single cross-sections move, the overall cross-section data, including principal axes position, the overall cross-section center, etc. are continuously upgraded. SAMBA computes plastic moduli thanks to a non linear algorithm. With this tool you can design cross-sections in a truly effective way.
Print preview in action: each new cross-section, old or new, may be printed to a useful cross-section card, including all the cross-section data in the preferred units of measurement.
