PAPERS
P. Rugarli, Classification of I- or H- shaped cross-sections under mixed internal actions,
Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 65, 1597-1606, 2009
This paper, published in the important peer-reviewed international magazine JCSR, explains the research work
done (in 1993) about the cross-section classification problem, and the "reclasses" classification
method, proposed by Paolo Rugarli.
P. Rugarli, Automatic checks of steel connections designed by freely placing components - Acta XXII Congress CTA,
Padova
September 2009
This paper is about steel connections calculation and presents the results got by program CSE.
C.Bernuzzi, P. Rugarli,
Prediction of the load carrying
capacity of slender cross-section members under eccentric axial load. Part 1:
the approach, Costruzioni Metalliche, Jul-Aug-2009 (English)
This paper presents a new method to compute load carrying capacity of
thin-walled, cold-formed cross-sections. The paper also discusses the current EN
1993-1-3 approach.
C.Bernuzzi, P. Rugarli,
Prediction of the load carrying
capacity of slender cross-section members under eccentric axial load. Part 2:
validation, Costruzioni Metalliche, Nov-Dec-2009 (English)
This is the second part of the previous paper, where results got are compared
with experimental ones, showing quite good results.
P. Rugarli, Simplified formulae to flexural and lateral-torsional buckling checks according to Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-1), Method 2 - Acta XXII Congress CTA, Padova
September 2009
This paper presents an alternative way, very useful, to write the formulae for flexural and lateral-torsional buckling checks
as required by Eurocode 3.
P. Rugarli, Zones, Grids or...Rooms? - Ingegneria Sismica
1/2008
This paper examines the new Italian seismic standards rules (NTC 2008) to determine design spectra. The paper
shows that the standard had several important problems of application, and that the precision required by this
standard is completely illusive. The "room-effect", that is the abrupt up to 20% change of design PGA from one
room to another of the same flat - due to clear errors in the standard -, is here acknowledged for the very first
time.
P. Rugarli,
Limit states load combinations: the un-told of the standards Ingegneria Sismica 2/2004
This important paper shows that the combination rules used by the Italian standard and by Eurocodes
embed not safe-side assumptions. The paper is a critic to the presently adopted way to apply Load and Resistance
Factor design (limit states).
P. Rugarli, Le magnifiche sorti e
progressive-L'Edilizia n° 133 (2004)
This paper refers to the previous one, disclosing to a wide public its main results. It also reconnects
to the public debate which followed Italian Ordinances 3274/2003 e 3316/2003, issued by Silvio Berlusconi's Prime Minister
office.
P. Rugarli, In margine
all'Ordinanza 3274- Ingegneria Sismica 3/2003
This paper has been published by the Italian technical magazine Ingegneria Sismica,
and clearly enumerates several technical reasons why Ordinance 3274 must be criticized.
P. Rugarli,Riflessioni e osservazioni sulla nuova Ordinanza 3274 - Il Giornale dell'Ingegnere n°18/2003, pagg 8-9
This paper was published by "Giornale dell'Ingegnere" and as well as the previous is critic toward Ordinance 3274.
The paper was one of the very first public act to criticize the standard which was later amended by 122 modifications.
P. Rugarli,Software di calcolo- in Manuale dell'Ingegnere "Colombo", 84^ed., Hoepli
This work, written in October 2002, is an overview of the problems related to structural software use: the reliability, the errors, the
conversion of a standard into a software program, the mutual relationship between who writes the Law, the Software Developer,
and the User.
P. Rugarli, Elastic and Plastic Flexural Properties. Automatic computation of generic cross-sections
- Costruzioni Metalliche 4/1998 (link to English version)
This paper describes a general method to compute elastic and plastic flexural properties of generic cross-sections.
The methodologies shown in the paper are used by all the programs of Castalia, and namely by the program SAMBA.
P. Rugarli, La classificazione secondo Ec3 dei profili ad I sottoposti a sollecitazioni miste - Acta Congress C.T.A. October 1993
This method is used by the automatic Sargon. automatic Eurocode 3 checker.
The paper is important because it shows that yet in 1993 problems due to the real applicability of the formulae
to classify cross-sections according to Eurocode 3 were pointed out. The paper deals with axial force plus biaxial bending
stress states and proposes a method which almost 20 years later has been published in JCSR (see above).
P. Rugarli, Software orientati alla comunicabilità ed al controllo dei dati nella ingegneria delle strutture - Acta Congress C.T.A. October 1991
This paper was written at the beginning of Castalia activity. It pointed out some important problems and issues in structural-software development at that time.
