The book Steel Connection Analysis is in for being available in printed version. This book will greately help to understand the logic and content of CSE.
CSE version 8.20 delivered. Important improvements and new features released, like the exchange of renodes, the direct link to 3D printing, and the CSE MASTER-READER mechanism. More important new features are coming.
CLASS4, the application related to effective cross-section evaluation has been translated into English, and is available for purchase. This application is very useful when class 4 cross-section must be checked for resistance.
Paolo Rugarli has edited the new Italian printed version of Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni 2018, the Italian technical standards referring to constructions (see here). In the foreword Mr Rugarli has pointed out the lack of reliability of PSHA (Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment), to evaluate seismic hazard. All the four last earthquakes in Italy, L'Aquila, Emilia, Ischia and Amatrice-Norcia Visso, have shown registered shakings much higher than those suggested by PSHA laws using "return periods" and other such tricky concepts. We endorse the use of NDSHA.
Castalia srl has become authorized reseller of the 3D printers Zortrax. A strict link between CSE and Zotrax printers has been set up. 3D printing and connection design are related as 3D printing helps to study the best design solutions.
The corrected proofs of the book Steel connection analysis have been delivered to
the publisher John Wiley & Sons. The book will have 520 pages. Here the link to the publisher's webpage. The book has been a huge effort that made year 2017 very busy with it. Now, a new intense
period of developing is forward, with several important and brand new tasks in the pipeline. The book is the first to cover steel connection analysis from a general viewpoint, and proposes new approaches and new terminology to deal with the problem of connections (e.g. all the jnode analytics is brand new). It is the result of more than 15 years of independent research.
CSE version 8.04 delivered.
Sargon v. 12.70 delivered, converging to a better seamless interface with CSE: the aim is to automate connection creation. While some features of CSE have appeared in other software, CSE is still the unique software in the world to directly import a whole model, recognize equal (j)nodes, assign parameterized connections to them, and to manage in a unique standardized manner all the connections of a whole structure.
During this period the book Steel connection analysis has been prepared for printing (copy editing, index, proofs correction).
New versions of CSE and Sargon have been released.
It has been confirmed that the book Steel connection analysis has been fully accepted
by John Wiley & Sons, and forwarded to the production branch. The book will have 490 pages, hardcover, and will be in colour. Also electronic versions will be
available, both in ePUB and PDF formats.
CSE version 8.0 is in for being released.

We have been working at non linear solver to add geometric non linearity (i.e. buckling via non linear analysis, also possibly with material non linearity), and to
add contact non linearity (i.e. the bearing surface may be considerered now a problem unknown, when dealing with the fem model of set of components).
The Standing Committee On Structural Safety, SCOSS, (UK) gives notice in its newsletter nr. 34 on April 2014 (page 3) that, following a report presented by Paolo Rugarli, a company in Italy whose advertisements included
phrases such as “seismic engineering for all” and “why strain yourself for buildings up to 4 floors” has been fined for misleading advertising.
The AGCM (Autorità Garante per la Concorrenza e il Mercato, Authority Regulating Market and Competition) fined the company 10,000 euros for “misleading
advertising”. As far as is known this is the first time in Italy, and quite possibly anywhere else, that an Official Regulatory Commission has issued a fine for a
misleading advertisements related to structural engineering software. The Italian Regulatory Agency has, in addition, indicated that no “absolute validation” of
any software is possible.
As SCOSS comments: "As ever the designer must be aware of his or her responsibilities when using software or even books containing formulae. If something goes wrong the supplier/
designer of load tables is not held to account but the engineer responsible for using products is. Checking of software by separate programs or approximate manual
calculations is usually advisable, and software cannot replace the engineering judgment of a competent professional. The implication of this Italian ruling in other
jurisdictions remains to be seen."

Consultants. Besides some demo of the program to possibly interested Structural Engineers have been set up. Presently the number of copies of CSE
sold in Singapore are 3.
There has been quite a lot of interest about the program, which is confirmed to be unique as to the generality of the approach to the steel connection checks.
Released the paper "La
valiunzione del calcolo strutturale", by di Paolo Rugarli. The article
discusses some validation activities set up by a University and a Research Company, showing how these validation activities miss quite important features.
The paper has been cited by several opinion makers (SEWC,
Ordine degli Ingegneri di Milano),
and states some very important general rules (validation should be possibly controlled by anyone, should not be a "secret"; it's impossible to validate in an
absolute way stating that a program "executes in a reliable way" some computational task as validation may not prove a program to be error free).
MAY 17 2012|
Released and available CSE LIGHT VERSION.
APRIL, 5 2012 |

CLASS4 has been released. It is presently in Italian only but it is planned its translation into
English. It's a low cost program very helpful for steel designers.
The new software program CLASS4, dealing with the effective data computation of typical steel cross-sections, has been completed (presently Italian only).
The typical cross sections are: IPE, HEA, HEB, HEM, RHS, Tee, UPN (channels), C, Z, L, W cold formed, with no edge fold, single edge
fold, and double edge fold.
The parameterized typical connection database of CSE has reached 150
JUNE, 2011 |
Added about 90 test schedules referred to the new non linear FEM solver
CURAN. Released Sargon version 9.70, with
important enhancements of the non linear solver CURAN (truss elements with gap,
non linear springs with gap) and with the addition of the effective area
computation of the thin-walled cold-formed members, thanks to the general
software tool set up one year ago.
An intense developing activity has been ended, aimed at adding very important
new features to the software CSE: 1) the ability
to create parametric steel joints or parametric steel connections
(PRenodes, parametric real nodes); 2) The parameterization of the
typical steel joints / steel connections; 3) The creation of a typical steel
connections database that can be used allowing the node creation by two
clicks; 4) The creation of a CSE LIGHT version, which will be later released: it
will only be able to deal with typical joints (while the full version enables
the free creation of joints and connections). We are presently adding typical
connections to the database.
FEBRUARY-MARCH, 2011 |
The new non linear solver CURAN development process moves forward with the
addition of the plate-shell (thick and thin) non linear finite elements, and
membrane elements. Nonlinear plate elements model will be solved using CURAN by
CSE, which will now be able to deal with
elastic-plastic analyses of components like angles, plates (base or end),
members with work processes, and so on. New validation schedules (about 100)
dealing with non linear analysis will soon be added to related the web site
